St. Petersburg, Fla. -- "It's the most UNwonderful time of the year."  Tax time!  We Americans are scrambling.  Pawing through piles of receipts, 1099's and other documents, looking for proof of any possible deductions.   Despite all the smart phones and organizational software programs there are still a few disorganized folks left.

Some county offices will be closed on Monday

Some Pinellas County government offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20, for training.

The tax collector and supervisor of elections offices will be closed. Animal Services will also be closed, as well as the Household Electronics and Chemical Collection Center.

The Pinellas County Courthouse will be open, as will the offices of the property appraiser and clerk of the circuit court. The courts of the Sixth Judicial Circuit (Pinellas and Pasco) will be in session. The landfill/scalehouse will be open regular hours.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - St. Petersburg's main library, 3745 Ninth Ave. N., will be closed for required building maintenance beginning the close of business Sunday, Feb. 19 through Thursday, Feb. 23.

During the closure, all main library operations, including AARP tax assistance, will be discontinued. Power to the facility will remain disconnected while a new chiller, boiler and electrical gear are installed.

Patrons are encouraged to visit other branches of the St. Petersburg Public Library System while this project is underway.

Free one-hour guided nature walks are offered along six different trails each Saturday and Sunday, except holidays, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Visitors at the park will be absorbed in the abundance of history, natural beauty and the complexity of the ecology not immediately apparent to the occasional beachgoer.

Clearwater tops in "Best Beach" survey

Clearwater tops in "Best Beach" survey

Clearwater, Florida - A online survey of 1,500 people have Clearwater Beach "Best beach" honors, topping Caladesi and Honeymoon Islands.

The survey was done by Visit St. Pete/Clearwater during a three week period in October, and covered 20 categories.

"We know what we each like about the area, so we wanted to create a way for people to champion their favorite among favorites," said VSPC Deputy Director David Downing. "To our knowledge, this type of destination-wide survey has never been done before."

St. Pete Beach -- The St. Pete Beach Recreation Division and the Friends of St. Pete Beach civic group are excited to bring back the very popular "Music in the Afternoon" event, free and open to all.

The first event of 2012 will be held on Sunday, Feb. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the St. Pete Beach Community Center and Aquatic Complex, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive, with events also scheduled for March, April, and May.

DRC approves new microbrewery

St. Petersburg, FL – During the monthly meeting of the Development Review Commission on Wed., Feb. 1, seven cases were presented for quasi-judicial review.  Six were approved unanimously by the DRC, with only one, a request for a sign variance, passing, but without a unanimous vote.  Staff had recommended against approving the variance, but the DRC overrode the staff recommendation.

The other presentations had all been recommended for approval by City staff and were unanimously approved by the Development Review Commissioners.
