Deputy injured in crash near Tropicana Field

St. Petersburg, Florida -- A deputy and a passenger in another vehicle were taken to the hospital after a crash near Tropicana Field Friday.

St. Pete Police say around 2:30 p.m., 48-year-old Cynthia Johnson was driving a 2011 Chevy TK south on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street N in the east curb lane and was approaching the intersection of 1st Avenue N. At the same time, police officer Bridget Voelker was heading west on 1st Avenue North in the north curb lane and was approaching the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street N.

Both vehicles then entered the intersection at the same time and crashed. The traffic signals were working correctly at the time and the driver at fault is still being investigated.

The front seat passenger of the Chevy, 51-year-old Carolyn Leonard, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with injuries and Officer Voelker was also taken to the same hospital with serious injuries.
