ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- St. Petersburg Police are investigating an early morning crash involving a 14-year-old driver.

According to police, the 14-year-old boy was driving a 2007 Pontiac southbound on Manatee Drive SE when he lost control of the car and crashed into a utility pole. Police say the Pontiac continued sliding and came to rest in the front yard of a house on Sunfish Drive SE.

The driver and his passenger, a 12-year-old boy, fled the scene before police arrived.

While investigating the crash, police say they found a heavy set black man, 25-35 years old, wearing a grey polo shirt and red shorts, lying in the front yard of a home a short distance from the accident. The man was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators are working to determine if the man was involved in the accident.
