ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - A St. Petersburg police officer has been cited for careless driving for a February crash that killed a man in a wheelchair.
Officer Mehmedin Karic was cited Thursday.
Police say the 26-year-old officer was driving a marked patrol car in the early morning hours when he hit 45-year-old Harold Charles Fleming, who was ejected from his wheelchair. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Traffic homicide investigators later found Karic was driving 61 mph in a 40-mph zone. He was not responding to an emergency call.
The investigation also found that Fleming had a blood alcohol level of 0.136 percent.
