City of St. Pete dedicates roadway to Dan Wheldon | News

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- On Wednesday, March 7, the City of St. Petersburg dedicated a roadway to honor race car driver and city resident Dan Wheldon, who lost his life in a racing accident last year in Las Vegas.

The dedication ceremony took place at the corner of Bayshore Boulevard and Albert Whitted Park, also known as Turn number 10 during the Honda Grand Prix.

In addition to the roadway, which runs from through Albert Whitted Park, plans for a two-panel monument to celebrate Dan Wheldon's life and St. Petersburg's role in Indy racing was unveiled.

Those who participated in the ceremony this afternoon were Mayor Bill Foster, Vice President and General Manager of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Tim Ramsberger, Randy Bernard, President and Chief Executive Officer of INDYCAR Kim Green, co-owner of Green Savoree Racing Promotions, Motorsports Manager T. E. McHale, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and Susie Wheldon.

"Dan loved St. Petersburg, our city loved him," said Mayor Bill Foster. "This monument will stand for generations to come as a remembrance to a great and humble man who left an indelible impression upon the sport of racing and upon the city he called home, St. Petersburg."
