ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A St. Petersburg Police cruiser hit and killed a man crossing a roadway in his wheelchair early Sunday morning.

It happened in the 6400 block of 38th Avenue North.

Investigators say around 4:20 a.m. 26-year-old Officer Mehmedin Karic hit the pedestrian in his wheelchair.

Emeregency crews transported the 48-year-old man to nearby St. Petersburg General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as Harold Charles Fleming of 6153 29th Avenue North.

Investigators says Officer Karic was not responding to a call at the time of the accident and was not operating his cruiser in emergency mode.
