Weekend events take root at Florida Botanical Gardens

Largo, Florida -- The Florida Botanical Foundation will join Pinellas County Extension this weekend to celebrate Pinellas County's centennial and 150 years of the Land Grant University.

Special events will be held in the Florida Botanical Gardens on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

FBG volunteers and master gardeners will be offering half-hour tours of the gardens, which include the formal and Florida Friendly garden areas and displays. The help desk will be staffed to assist the community visitors that have horticulture questions.

Pinellas County Extension celebrates 150 years of Solutions for your Life

One hundred and fifty years ago, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the land grant university system which set the stage for Extension outreach education to local communities.

This law directed states to create institutions of higher learning for the study of agricultural science and engineering, providing 30,000 acres of public land to each state for that purpose. Land grant universities support outreach activities through their Extension Services.

Pinellas County lowers interest rate for homebuyers

The Housing Finance Authority of Pinellas County has lowered the interest rate on its First-Time Homebuyers Program to 3.75 percent.

The 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage program is for individuals in Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties who have never owned a home, have not owned a home in the last three years or are veterans.

Down payment and closing cost assistance is also available with the Home Key Plus 2nd mortgage. Rates and terms vary. Borrowers must have a minimum credit score of 640 and are required to take a free homebuyer education class.

Annual water system maintenance program set to begin

The method of water treatment utilized by Pinellas County and its wholesale customers will be temporarily modified between Sept. 4 and Oct. 5, 2012.

This short-term change from chloramine to chlorine disinfection is a routine maintenance measure designed to optimize water quality. The maintenance program was originally scheduled to begin Aug. 27 but is being delayed one week to allow completion of Republican National Convention activities.

Water resources affect not only the availability of clean drinking water, but also agriculture, fisheries, aquatic life, recreation and the tourism industry. Water is a vital resource in need of protection for the health of Florida’s citizens and its economy.

Feeding Children Everywhere donates food in Bay area

Lakeland, Florida -Feeding Children Everywhere (FCE) is donating 100,000 healthy meals to 30 school districts across the country this August. 

This donation is part of a national $3 million meal project in Tampa that will rally 20,000 people from the Bay area to hand-package rice, lentils, veggies and Himalayan sea salt into easy-to-make meals.

South Tampa families throw charity beach bash

Tampa, Florida-- Several South Tampa families are throwing a "Last Days of Summer Beach Bash" charity event at The Don Cesar Loews Beach Resort in St. Pete Beach.

The waterfront event includes a wiffle ball Tournament and barefoot dance party on Saturday, August 11, from 9 a.m. through sunset.

They created the event to raise money to help children with allergies and Primary Immune Deficiency.
