Water resources affect not only the availability of clean drinking water, but also agriculture, fisheries, aquatic life, recreation and the tourism industry. Water is a vital resource in need of protection for the health of Florida’s citizens and its economy.

Hikes heat up discovery at Weedon Island Preserve

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Hikes, hikes and more hikes are offered throughout the month. Weedon Island guided hikes are available each Saturday in August. On these weekly scheduled hikes participants learn about the ecosystems and the early residents of Weedon Island Preserve while hiking the coastal uplands and the boardwalks through mangrove forests. The 9 to 11 a.m. hikes are best for ages 6 and older.

Tampa Bay Watch receives historic gift

Tierra Verde, Florida – Tampa Bay Watch received the largest private gift in its 20-year history this month from The Mosaic Company Foundation. The $225,000 gift will support Tampa Bay Watch’s Community-Based Oyster Habitat and Water Quality initiatives. 

Community-Based Oyster projects are a cornerstone of Tampa Bay Watch’s restoration programs.  These projects encourage oyster growth through the construction and installation of oyster domes and oyster shell bars.

Disaster recovery center closing on Aug. 4

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state of Florida’s joint disaster recovery center will close 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4.

The center is located in the Park Station business complex, 5851 Park Blvd. in Pinellas Park.

The office will be opened from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. six days a week, and from noon until 6 p.m. on Sunday. Additionally, local governments and non-profit agencies have until Thursday, Aug. 9, to apply for public assistance grants.

Watering schedule returns to two-days-per-week

Pinellas County, Florida -- The Southwest Florida Water Management District voted to let emergency Modified Phase II water shortage restrictions expire today for the Tampa Bay Area.

The Water Management District found significant improvements in aquifer and river levels as a result of Tropical Storm Debby and regular summer rains.

The area remains under a Modified Phase I water shortage order until Dec. 31, but the irrigation schedule returns to 2-days-per-week.

Residents may water before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.
