Pinellas uses 'plan B' to tally Primary Election results

Largo, Florida-- All 299 Pinellas County precincts' votes are currently being tabulated at the Supervisor of Elections Office in Largo.

After a server and back-up server failure, talliers are forced to count the county's voting results from back-up USB memory sticks.

This method of tallying votes is not uncommon. Even if a malfunction had not occurred with the main server tonight, the USB drive numbers would be counted and used to confirm results recorded from the main modem feed.

Deborah Clark, the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, tells us that the server intended to tally tonight's votes is the new optical scan system installed in 2008.

Tests of the server beforehand checked out, so tonight's server malfunction came as a surprise.

Tonight's tallying should be done by 11.
