St. Petersburg, Florida -- Hikes, hikes and more hikes are offered throughout the month. Weedon Island guided hikes are available each Saturday in August. On these weekly scheduled hikes participants learn about the ecosystems and the early residents of Weedon Island Preserve while hiking the coastal uplands and the boardwalks through mangrove forests. The 9 to 11 a.m. hikes are best for ages 6 and older.
The Saturday, Aug. 18, hike from 8 to 10 a.m. is a perfect opportunity for adult photographers to hone their skills. After a classroom session highlighting specific wildlife behaviors and camera tips, guides assist participants in capturing the natural beauty outdoors.
Be a citizen marine scientist in this scallop study!
On Thursday, Aug. 16, from 1 to 2 p.m. all ages will enjoy participating in this Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute-sponsored research study of bay scallops made possible through a Pinellas County Sea Grant. This program will provide an overview of bay scallop ecology. Following the presentation, participants will help to measure and track the progress of caged bay scallops at Weedon Island Preserve.
Families are invited to stop by the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center’s open classroom, Aug. 11 and Aug. 25, anytime between 1 and 3 p.m. to participate in a variety of activities. Discover culture and nature with your child on Aug. 11 to participate in a variety of self-guided archaeological activities. Sifting through the past will teach how early people made their living from our bay and waterways. On Aug. 25, go coastal and have fun with fish ear bones. This is an opportunity to learn about fish ear bones, called otoliths, which tell us many things about the fish and the water where they live.
Connecting People and Place is an art-inspired, permanent hands-on educational exhibit of the area’s history, ecology and people at the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. The center is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Saturday; closed Sunday through Wednesday and holidays.
