Pinellas Housing Authority implements rapid housing program for veterans

Pinellas County -- Eighteen homeless veterans are a step closer to having a home of their own this week, thanks to the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program and the Pinellas County Housing Authority (PCHA).  PCHA implemented the first of several HUD-VASH Express Rapid Housing Program briefings for a group of homeless veterans referred by the Bay Pines Medical Center.

"We developed the HUD VASH Express Rapid Housing Program to help VASH eligible, homeless veterans find permanent homes and get back on their feet quicker" said Debra Johnson, PCHA's Executive Director. The model embraces the "Housing First" idea that vulnerable and at-risk homeless individuals and families are more responsive to interventions and social services support after they are in their own housing, rather than while living in temporary/transitional facilities or housing programs.  With permanent housing, these veterans can begin to regain the self-confidence and control over their lives they lost when they became homeless.

High School Player of the week

With his team trailing by a touchdown at the half, Countryside running back Diomi Roberts told coach Jared Davis to give him the football.  Davis did and Roberts responded with the performance of the week.

The senior rolled up 227 yards on 31 carries with three second-half touchdowns, leading the still undefeated Countryside Cougars to a huge Class 7A, District 9 win over Pinellas Park.

Roberts basically strapped his team to his back, and ran with it.

Council Race 3: Where they stand on Downtown development

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida - Two candidates will vie for the District 3 seat in St. Pete's city council and 10 News asked both Bill Dudley and Brent Hatley about how they'd operate if elected.  In the final part of a reoccurring series, they delve into the future of development in Downtown St. Petersburg - a hot-button topic with Beach Drive thriving and BayWalk in transition.

Dudley, 67, the incumbent, didn't reply to the questionnaire, but has generally stood with Mayor Foster on issues of economic development.  In 2009, he cast one of the deciding votes in the controversy to vacate the sidewalk in front of BayWalk - a decision that ultimately had little effect on the complex.
