Recycle tree into Yuletide mulch

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- You can find a second use for your Christmas tree by allowing the city to recycle it into decorative "Yuletide" mulch.

You can drop the tree off at one of the city's five brush sites. If you're unable to drop off your tree, sanitation crews will provide curb-side (or alley) pick-up of discarded Christmas trees in the neighborhoods on Saturday, January 7. (No artificial trees.)

Free seminars available for first time homebuyers

This January, the Pinellas County Housing Authority and the Community Service Foundation will be holding a free two-part First Time Homebuyer seminars and workshops.

Participants will gain an understanding of the various types of assistance and programs available to first time homebuyers.

The seminars are scheduled for Jan. 3 and 10, from 6 - 9 p.m., at PCHA's Central Office, located at 11479 Ulmerton Road in Largo.

The housing authority will also be holding a two-part Household Bugeting Seminar Feb. 16 and 23 at the same location.

Body of teen found in stolen vehicle

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Police are investigating the murder of a 15-year-old, whose body was found inside a stolen Dodge Caravan.

Officers say they were called to an alley behind 23rd Avenue South Thursday night for a report of a suspicious vehicle.  There they found the Caravan and inside was the body of Carl Lee Martin.  Martin had reportedly been shot in his upper body and was declared dead at the scene.

Martin was a student at Pinellas Secondary School, while the vehicle had been reported stolen from a Lakeland apartment complex on Wednesday.

Boater fishes suicidal streaker from Tampa Bay

St. Petersburg, Florida - A disturbed man stripped naked and jumped into the Tampa Bay near the Dali Museum Thursday afternoon. Police say a boater brought him to shore, where paramedics performed CPR that saved his life.

The man was tentatively identified as a 52-year-old transient known to frequent the downtown area.

Witnesses reported he disrobed near the Dali Museum, ran nude across Bayshore Boulevard, paused on top of the seawall railing, made the sign of the cross and jumped into the water.

County offices to close for the holidays

Pinellas County government offices will be closed on Monday, Dec. 26, and Monday, Jan. 2, in observance of Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The courts of the Sixth Judicial Circuit (Pinellas and Pasco) will not be in session Monday, Dec. 26, and Monday, Jan. 2, except for first-appearance advisory hearings and emergency situations.

Animal Services will be closed on Monday, Dec. 26, and Monday, Jan. 2, with the outside animal drop-off area remaining open.

Pinellas County, FL -- The week before Thanksgiving, Florida Blood Services’ (FBS) donors were told they could decline their personal thank you gift and have a $5 donation made to their local food bank instead. 

Donors were also told they could drop off non-perishable food items at any of the Donor Center locations to provide additional support to those who are hungry. To help add to the donation, FBS chose not to send out Holiday cards.
