A writing contest for all ages!

Safety Harbor, Florida -- Celebrate the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon's arrival on Florida's coast by getting your story published in a writing contest. 

The contest is for all ages as there are different age groups. The goal of the contest is to learn more about Florida's unique history, wildlife, culture and people through writing. 

The contest will run from June 1 to August 15. The stories must be original works of fiction related to Florida. 

The contest is limited to one entry per person with a Pinellas County library card.

Eagle docks at the Port of St. Petersburg

Eagle docks at the Port of St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Florida -- The U. S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle will docks at the Port of St. Petersburg this Friday. You can take a free, public tour of the vessel Friday afternoon and Sunday. Large crowds are expected.

Here are the tour times:

Friday, June 14, from 2 to 8:30 p.m.

Sunday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday, cadets will be welcomed aboard for a five-hour School of the Ship training, where they learn how to haul lines, set more than 23,500 square feet of sail, and climb six miles of ship's rigging.

Prescribed burn at Weedon Island Preserve

Saint Petersburg, Florida -- The Florida Forest Service is conducting a prescribed burn at Weedon Island Preserve today, Thursday, June 13. 

The prescribed burn is expected to start at 9 a.m. and end around 1 p.m. It will involve approximately 10 acres of land. 

 

Changes coming to red light cameras

TAMPA, Florida - There's hope on the horizon for Florida drivers who are nervous about the state's short yellow lights at red light camera (RLC) intersections.

Thursday morning, elected officials in both St. Petersburg and Pasco County are slated to discuss yellow light lengths at separate meetings.

Accused 'PlayStation predator' worked at hospital

St. Petersburg, Florida - There are new details in the developing story about an accused Playstation predator. Police say his 14-year-old victim from California was flying home Wednesday night to be reunited with his family.

Major Brian Dugan of the Tampa Police Department described 36-year-old Tony McLeod's demeanor as they questioned him. 

"The suspect - he is trying to justify the situation that he's in."

RED ALERT: State confirms insects after customer's report

St. Petersburg, Florida- Dawna Dael loved ordering meals from Great Wall Chinese Take-Out on 62nd Avenue North in St. Pete.

"It's just up the street, so once a month or so, we'd order and my husband would go pick it up," said Dael.

But last month Dawna says she found something totally unexpected hidden in her chicken lo mein.
