Florida city abuzz: Who among us won Powerball jackpot?

USA- Today --The Florida sun was shining a little bit brighter Sunday on an unidentified person who beat odds of 175 million-to-1 on a Powerball ticket worth $590.5 million, the largest jackpot in the game's history.

The lucky numbers in Saturday night's drawing were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11. A mob of media and the curious amassed Sunday outside the Zephyr Commons Publix supermarket, in the Tampa suburb of Zephyrhills, where the winning ticket was sold.

Pinellas County lowers interest rate for homebuyers

Pinellas County, Florida -- The Housing Finance Authority of Pinellas County has lowered the interest rate on its First Time Homebuyers Program to 2.99 percent. The 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage program is for individuals living in Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties who have never owned a home, have not owned a home in the last three years or veterans.

Toast the Pier

St. Petersburg, Florida -- The St. Pete Pier is set to close at the end of the month and a party is being thrown in order to say goodbye on Saturday, May 18. 

The fun events begin at noon and will include a show by The Tampa Bay Water Ski team at 1 p.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. There will also be bagpipes, children's entertainment, local artists and much more. 

Then at 6 p.m. the evening festivities begin, including sunset toasts, and the Ultimate Pier Cocktail contest.

Bystanders save veteran from drowning

Lealman, Florida -- A veteran was saved by two bystanders after falling in a pond.

On Friday, May 17, veteran Robert Lunay was looking at a pond at the Disabled American Veterans located on 37th Street North. Suddenly, his wheelchair slipped and Mr. Lunay, a double-amputee, rolled into the pond. 

Two bystanders, Robert Fields and Norman Steeers, heard Mr. Lunay calling for help and rescued Mr. Lunay. 

Firefighters arrived to find Mr. Lunay being held up in the water by the two men. Mr. Lunay was not injured.

Pinellas County ceremony awards courageous service

Pinellas County, Florida -- The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office hosted their annual awards ceremony on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The awards ceremony recognizes courageous service, as well as, personal initiative in solving crimes and providing public service.

The Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year was awarded to Deputy Jim Piper and Detective Holly Tsanakaliotis. These two deputies acted courageously to save a four-year-old boy's life by administering CPR.
