Bay area volunteers Paddle Against Cancer

Saint Petersburg, Florida -- If you enjoy getting in the water, then you'll love this. One of the fastest growing sports in the country will "Paddle Against Cancer" on May 25 at The Club at Treasure Island.

"We started it three years ago to benefit Moffitt Cancer Center," said nonprofit founder 52-year-old Gene Evans.

Gene Evans started the "Paddle Against Cancer" event to promote the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle. Last year's event raised $21,000 and this year he's expecting an even bigger turnout.

Gov. Scott used his line-item veto power to remove the project from next year's budget.

He evaluated projects with three criteria: does it create jobs, improve education or make government more efficient.
